Fire crews battle apartment fire in extreme cold in Plymouth

PLYMOUTH, Mich. (WXYZ) - Firefighters are on the scene of a fire at the Park Manor Apartments in Plymouth.

The complex is located on Plymouth Road near Mill Street. The fire has forced officials to close roads in the immediate area.

Firefighters say the fire began at about 2:20 a.m. Officials say the fire may have been triggered by an electric blanket, however an investigation will be conducted to determine an exact cause.

Twenty-one apartments have been destroyed in the fire. Officials say a number of people needed help getting out of the building.

One person has been taken to the hospital. She is believed to have been burned while using the blanket.

Firefighters searched the building and pulled out after having found no victims inside. They are now concentrating on attacking the fire from outside.

The extreme cold is affecting efforts to fight the fire, with firefighters being rotated at the scene to keep them safe. Crews are also battling the freezing water from their hoses.

Crews from surrounding communities have been called to the scene to assist.
