WYANDOTTE, Mich. (WXYZ) - Smoke and fire could be seen from down river and beyond after flames broke out in a popular bar near Biddle and Oak in historic downtown Wyandotte.
The fire started around 5 p.m. at the Lions, Tigers and Beers Bar. The cause is under investigation but one employee said it was possible the flames were ignited in a beer storage room.
There were no injuries. Customers and staff were able to get out of the building before the fire spread. There are concerns that smoke and water damage may affect businesses next door, including a bridal shop.
The flames and smoke were so intense fire crews from across the area, including Detroit, came to assist. Detroit Fire brought their tug boat to pump water from the river. More than 12 hours after the fire began crews were still on the scene extinguishing hot spots. They’ll be picking up the pieces for some time and many are left wondering what happens next.
"I don't know what we're going to do yet, we have a meeting tomorrow and we'll discuss what immediate impact the DDA might be able to make for these property owners. ”
Natalie Rankine is with the director of the Downtown Development Authority. She says the loss of LTB will be a tremendous blow to the community and not just because the bar was a popular. She says the owners were known to assist a number of charitable causes as well as many in the community in need of a helping hand.
“They had a fundraiser nearly every Sunday. They didn't this week, so it wasn't as busy as it normally was. ”
For now the focus has shifted to the investigation into the cause of the fire which has left a whole in the heart of downtown Wyandotte. There is a lot of uncertainty, but for the time being, city and business leaders plan to continue moving forward.
"Street fair is still going to go on. It's July 11th through the 14th. I just really want to encourage people to come down. Not to gawk, but to buy from our business owners because they really need you now more than ever."
