HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (WXYZ) - With payless paydays just weeks away council members and the mayor voted to fire City Manager William Cooper. The mayor had the tie-breaking vote and she sent him packing.
It was a heated meeting Wednesday night, with council members trading barbs -- accusing each other of not properly guiding the city out of its current mess.
City officials who voted for Cooper's ouster say he did not properly plan for Hamtramck's crisis and did not provide contingency plans. Council members must come up with $500,000 before next month otherwise all city staffers will go unpaid.
Cooper was fired just one day after circulating a memo that detailed Hamtramck's turmoil. In the letter he says the city is hemorrhaging cash because of the closure of the American Axle plant, plummeting property tax revenues and soaring healthcare costs. The memo warns payless paydays could start as soon as March 28th.
No concrete plan was laid out to close the deficit, but officials did discuss taking out a loan with the state's help, but that could send Hamtramck even deeper into debt. Council members will meet again next Tuesday to discuss what to do next.
