ROMULUS, Mich. (WXYZ) - A new school year can be tough enough, but hundreds of students in Inkster had to find new schools at the last minute and they will start Monday in brand new schools.
There will be no welcome back message for students in Inkster at the public schools. The state dissolved the broke Inkster Public School District earlier this summer and parents scrambled to find their children a new school.
“It’s been kind of a whirlwind,” said Superintendent Paula Daniels of Romulus Community Schools.
Romulus registered 200 of the Inkster students for the new year in their elementary, middle, and high schools.
“We’ve had some teams who have come together with some inkster teams to help with the transition so it would be smooth,” said Daniels.
Several of the students are seniors who will now graduate from Romulus High School and go through their last year split up from their friends.
“You spend three years at a particular school and you anticipate coming into your senior year with all of your friends and now this happened,” said Romulus High School Principal Hal Heard. “We want to make sure that those students are taken care of and that their post secondary plans are as well and make sure they have a great senior year.”
All of the Romulus Community Schools have some sort of programs or events to help during the transition. They were just one of four districts Inkster parents were able to chose from for their children. The other districts include Westwood, Wayne-Westland, and Taylor.
Romulus also hired some of the teaching staff and other employees from Inkster who were laid off.
