DETROIT, Mich. (WXYZ) - Detroit shined Friday night as cars were stars at the start of the 2013 North American International Auto Show.
“Cobo is beautiful and the product is unbelievable. Not only is the industry back but Detroit is coming back also,” said Detroit Mayor Dave Bing.
Organizers said the charity preview is the single largest one night fundraiser in the country. It’s a night to dress up in glamorous gowns and designer threads and raise money for children’s charities in southeastern Michigan. Friday night they raised $3.9 million dollars
“Oh it’s beautiful the auto show is great. It’s always just state of the art. I love it,” said Charlie Peters who attends the auto show every year.
“I think it’s wonderful. I think it’s an even bigger turnout than it was last year. I think things are starting to turn around,” said wife Laurie Peters.
Fifty brand new vehicles made their debut at the event. People come from all over to be first at seeing the new must have vehicles.
“Oh it’s wonderful. I mean to see the support of the cars and to see what’s available for us to buy. It’s wonderful. I can’t imagine a better format,” said Stacey Smith who came in from Kansas City for the special night.
The dollars the auto show drives into the city every year make a greater economic impact than even hosting the Super Bowl.
“We need to be proud of this city. We’ve got a lot more going. We have a bridge going. We’ve got eastern market going, we’ve got a new arena coming. This is a comeback city and let’s be proud and loud about it,” said Governor Rick Snyder.
Channel 7 served as the official broadcast partner. Our very own Stephen Clark and Carolyn Clifford hosted the red carpet charity preview so you at home could also experience all the glitz and glam of the night.
There was even a surprise musical performance by Uncle Kracker to close out the end of a night where cars were not the only stars.
“I’m honored to be a Detroit citizen on a day like this,” said Charlie Peters.
