Jury convicts mother of setting fire that killed two of her children

HURON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) - A jury has convicted a Huron Township mother of murder in the fatal fire at a mobile home that killed two of her children.

Sharon Hinojosa was charged with arson and first and second degree murder in the deaths of Alayna and Anthony Hinojosa. The children were just 3 and 4-years-old at the time of their deaths in October 2009.

Prosecutors argued that Hinojosa set the family’s Huron Township trailer on fire while the kids were still inside. They say she ran from the home with another of her children as the flames spread.

Police believed the Hinojosa set the fire to get back at her boyfriend.

The trial began in early November after Hinojosa was found competent to stand trial in July.
