HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (WXYZ) - LaTiece Howard is a mother of three and an at risk social worker at Kosciuszko Middle School in Hamtramck.
"We live in a really small community with a lot of unemployment and underemployment. We had families coming in asking for supplemental food," says Howard.
Sometimes, kids would come to her office and ask for something to eat. That's when she decided to do something about it.
With the help of a friend at Forgotten Harvest and support of the school principal, she set up a mobile food pantry. It's held on the 4th Friday of every month right behind the school. It's run by parents and community members. All of them are volunteers.
Families of Kosciuszko Middle School Dickinson West Elementary, which is in the same building, can get all kinds of food and even fresh produce!
Tina McGee is a part-time lunch aide at the school and is the mother of four.
"It helps me out a lot. It’s just complicated when you don’t have a ride. This is just very convenient when it’s right here in the neighborhood," says McGee.
However, now the mobile food pantry needs your help! It desperately needs volunteers to keep it going during the summer.
"The need isn't gonna go away just because kids aren't here for the summer. We need reliable people to help," says Howard.
She says anyone with an hour or two to spare would make a huge difference!
"Every little bit helps," Howard.
The upcoming pantry dates are:
Volunteers start at 8:00 a.m. If you are interested in helping out, please contact LaTiece Howard at firstname.lastname@example.org.
