Local students inspire businesses to help the city of Newtown

CANTON (WXYZ) - After the horrific tragedy that took place in Connecticut had left a nation stunned, one local school started thinking about how they can help those left recovering from the acts of violence in Newtown.

7 Action News first introduced viewers to some Plymouth High School students on Monday. The teens were in the preliminary stages earlier in the week of sending cards of kindness to those affected in Newtown. 

Since 7 Action News first aired the story, the school inspired a viewer to get involved and help.

Now the school district and that viewer are aiming to touch the entire city. 

Steve Sanders saw that report and works for Avanti Press, a Detroit based card company. Workers at the card company were so touched by the students’ willingness to do something to help the hurting community, they donated 30,000 cards to the school district.

Not only will the victims’ families get a card, but every resident in Newtown will get a message of love and support.

Students, staff, and teachers from the Plymouth – Canton School District will write personal messages from the heart so that family and friends of victims, surviving students, first responders, and those who live there will be uplifted.

Beth Savalox, one of the teachers who spearheaded the cards of kindness act told 7 Action News another company was also inspired by the idea and has stepped in to pay for shipping.

Organizers hope to gather all of the signed cards Friday and have them shipped off by Monday.
