FLAT ROCK, Mich. (WXYZ) - A Flat Rock man has been charged in a stunning case of animal cruelty that was discovered over the weekend.
Lester France has been charged with Abandoning and Cruelty to 4 to 10 Animals. He is expected to be arraigned at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday in 33rd District Court in Woodhaven.
France is accused of abandoning six dogs at a home on Cahill.
The remains of four dogs were found in a backyard kennel and it seems the animals were starved to death. “After doing this for over twenty years I don’t try to get into the minds of why people do what they do. I would not be able to function,” said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy.
Worthy announced the charge Wednesday afternoon. “Really horrendous treatment of animals,” said Worthy.
Two dogs were found alive – but one was so weak it could barely move. Shortly after it was rescued Sunday, police say the dog was euthanized.
Police were tipped off about the severe mistreatment by a caller. The dogs were left outside of a vacant home in crates with no water or food.
According to a neighbor, the animals were American Bulldogs and they were all several years old. One of the surviving animals remains at the Flat Rock animal shelter.
If convicted, France could spend two years behind bars.
Worthy thinks the punishment for abusing an animal is not tough enough. “We should be treating all life seriously,” said Worthy. “If someone mistreats or abuses an animal or a child it should be taken seriously. Obviously if it’s a child the laws are much tougher but again we think that all life should taken seriously whether it’s human or animal is important.”
Worthy said she will be meeting with lawmakers to try make prison sentences longer for animal abusers.
