CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) - A Belleville man died on I-275 in Canton Township Friday morning when the pickup he was driving slammed into the rear of a parked tractor trailer in a construction zone.

The pavement was wet from rain on northbound I-275 near Cherry Hill around 8:00 a.m. when the pickup crashed with such force, it drove the pickup's engine into the cab of the vehicle and burst into flames.

Road construction workers quickly pulled him from behind the wheel before the fire spread, but state police report the man was likely dead on impact.

“There were witnesses,” said Michigan State Trooper Rocco Daversa of the Taylor post. “One witness said the driver appeared to be slumped over the wheel just before the crash.”

Daversa said there were no skid marks on the pavement, an indication that the driver did not apply brakes to avoid the collision. The Wayne County medical examiner will have to determine if a physical condition or emergency for the driver played a part in the fatal accident.
