GARDEN CITY, Mich. (WXYZ) - 7 Action News has learned that at least one person has been injured in a house fire in Garden City.

Firefighters have responded to the home on Deering Street just off of Ford Road.

Darin Olson, his girlfriend and their 11 1/2 year-old son Gabe were all inside the house when the fire started around 10 this morning.

Olson says he heard the smoke alarm go off and his son Gabe also came upstairs to wake him up.

They both got outside, but Olson's girlfriend did not. She was trapped downstairs and the smoke was really starting to fill the house.

"I didn't know where she was at the time. I was yelling for her," says Olson.

Gabe says a neighbor named Mary went to the front porch and was talked to his mom and guided her out of the house.

Gabe says if it wasn't for Mary, his mother wouldn't have made it out of that house alive.

Action News spoke with Mary on the phone. She says she was driving by and saw the fire. She drove by the house and say Darin and Gabe standing outside. She asked them if everyone was out of the house and Gabe told her his mother was still inside.

Mary says she got on her hands and knees and crawled into the house through the front door. She says she could barely breathe because the smoke was so thick. She managed to yell to Wendy and within moments she saw a burned hand reach out to her. Mary says she helped pull Wendy out to safety.

Wendy suffered first, second and third degree burns. She was transported to Detroit Receiving Hospital. She is expected to recover.

The fire started in a back bedroom.
