HARPER WOODS, Mich. (WXYZ) - Police are warning seniors in Harper Woods about a scam involving a fake police officer.
The man calls seniors and claims to be a detective with the Harper Woods Police department.
He tells them his name is "Captain Dembrowski" or "Captain Jack."
The department says there is no one working for them with either of those names.
The man tells seniors that he has a person in custody that has stolen their financial information.
He then asks seniors to confirm their financial information on the phone, including credit card and bank account numbers.
In all of the cases reported to police, the residents have hung up on the man before disclosing any of their information.
Police say it is common for officers to make calls similar to these, but residents should verify the caller's identity before giving out any personal or financial information.
Concerned residents can call the Harper Woods Police department at (313) 343-2530.
