RIVER ROUGE, Mich. (WXYZ) - The city of River Rouge's 85th annual Rouge Days festival was hit hard by Saturday night's storm.
The wind and rain knocked down trees, blew over tents and even affected the rides.
“It was sprinkling, raining, sky was black,” said Amanda Wind.
Amanda Wind was working the Hungry Howie’s tent when the first storm rolled in.
“There was no warning, we had scattered thunderstorm warnings,” said Amanda.
The high winds, rain, and hail hit before people at the festival could take cover.
“Three tents had already blew over mine,” said Amanda.
The storm blew the beer tent over and we found it draped over the fence. People were telling us they had to lie over their children and keep them low to the ground.
“Yeah, we all hovered over them, it was scary,” said Clinton Samon.
Witnesses tell Action News that at least three people waiting in line for fish dinners when they were burned with flying grease.
“Three kids were in there, and it poured over on top of them,” said Amanda.
As we talked with people inside the park, police asked our crew and others still hanging around to leave for our own safety. Ten minutes later the tornado sirens were sounding off to warn residents about a second round of storms.
Fire trucks and police cars were constantly riding up and down West Jefferson Avenue and major power outages left many in town in the dark.
A hospital spokesperson said that at least six people were treated at Henry Ford Hospital in Wyandotte and released with non-life threatening injuries.
