VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) - The search for two missing swimmers at Belleville Lake in Van Buren Township has ended tragically.
Officials recovered both swimmers Sunday morning. They had disappeared Saturday evening.
They are described as a man and woman in their twenties.
The brother of one of the missing swimmers says he was told they swam out to a sand bar not far off shore. When they tried to return to land, they had trouble. A third swimmer who was out with them saw them go under, and not resurface.
Rescue crews went out on the lake Saturday evening after they went under, but too much time passed. They put the search on hold until the morning.
Signs posted near where they went missing warn that the water is deep, and there are fast currents.
Belleville Lake is about 1,270 acres.
