LIVONIA (WXYZ) - The holiday shopping season gets started a day earlier as Wal-Mart opens its doors at 8:00 p.m. Thursday.

The big box retailer is adverting deep discounts just as families wrap up their holiday meal.

Some shoppers say the earlier hours work well for families with young children. “I believe if you’re done with your family functions and you have young kids and they’re in bed, then it’s probably a good option for people to have,” said shopper Julie Gavigan.

Others say they won’t sacrifice family time for a bargain, and they feel it’s unfair for employees to have give up that time for work.

“They should be able to spend time with their families and not be in that craziness called Wal-Mart,” said Laurie Robert-Brown, a shopper.

Comment from Wal-Mart was not immediately available.
