HAMTRAMCK, MI (WXYZ) - Police sources say the killer or killers, of Ashley Conaway and Abreeya Brown used duct tape to bind their hands and legs before shooting the two Hamtramck women to death. They were buried under mounds of dirt and short logs in a shallow makeshift grave on Detroit's west side.
The bodies of Ashley, 22, and her best friend Abreeya, 18, were found Sunday afternoon by Detroit Police in a wooded area near 6 Mile and Telegraph.
Sources tell 7 Action News that a newer looking shovel was also found nearby.
On February 28, the women were abducted at gunpoint outside the Hamtramck home where they lived with Abreeya’s stepfather who told police that he exchanged gunfire with the two kidnappers.
Conaway’s ex-boyfriend 26-year-old Brandon Cain, and his friend, 24-year-old Brian Lee, are suspected in the abduction.
Cain and Lee are in custody on charges stemming from an earlier shooting in Detroit involving the women.
On February 8, Detroit Police allege that Cain ordered Lee to open fire on Ashley and Abreeya as they left his west side home.
Cain was reportedly upset that Ashley had just ended their relationship.
A bullet grazed Ashley, but she survived.
After Ashley and Abreeya went to police and the investigation began, Cain allegedly began trying to bribe the women, hoping they would not testify against him in the shooting.
The women refused thousands of dollars from Cain because they wanted to see him and Lee prosecuted.
Sources tell 7 Action News that investigators have secretly recorded conversations of the bribery attempts.
During the investigation, Detroit Police urged Ashley and Abreeya to stay away from Hamtramck and even put them up in a motel in another county so Cain couldn't find them.
But on February 28, Hamtramck Police say Cain and Lee finally caught up to the women and kidnapped them.
For weeks, police from Hamtramck and Detroit along with Michigan State Police searched for Ashley and Abreeya. On Sunday their bodies were found.
As of right now, Cain and Lee have not been charged with the kidnapping or murders, but they are in custody, being prosecuted for the shooting on February 8.
A preliminary examination is set for Friday, March 30. And even without the testimony of Ashley and Abreeya, investigators believe they still have sufficient evidence, including other witnesses, in the case.
