DETROIT, Mich (WXYZ) - When a huge tree  was uprooted and blown out of a concrete sidewalk on Dearborn street in Southwest Detroit, it landed on five of the Cruz family's cars, snapped power lines, and natural gas lines.

"No gas for 5 days we have kids here, cold water for 5 days, it's hard" said Yesenia Cruz while holding her year old son.

DTE told Action News for safety reasons they would not turn the gas back on until the base of the tree was removed, but they also told the Cruz family piping lodged in the tree roots makes it unsafe for them to remove it as well.

The Cruz family claims the tree is on city property, but say their calls to the city have gone unanswered "We've called the DTE, we've called the city they say they are not responsible but who is" Yesenia says.

After Action News reported on the Cruz family's plight on Thursday, we brought in the experts from Dearborn Tree Service in Westland. They agreed to remove the tree stump that was wrapped around the roots.

While that was happening, a DTE crew was sent out to reroute the broken gas line. DTE tells Action News that service will be restored to the home sometime Friday evening.
