WESTLAND, Mich. (WXYZ) - At Stevenson Middle School, students, parents and staff are wondering why a 13-year-old brought a gun to school.

“Was he just playing or trying to show it off, or was he actually going to harm somebody,” said Kim Schweninger, whose son attends Stevenson Middle School.

The superintendent says the gun was hidden inside the student’s backpack. When it was found, the gun was not loaded, but the teen did bring ammunition, which was also allegedly in his backpack.

“The gun was taken from the home. It was not under lock and key as we understand it at this point. The investigation is still ongoing… We believe at this point it was a .45 handgun,” said Wayne-Westland Community Schools Superintendent Gregory Baracy.

It was another student who saw the handgun on the way to school. The 13-year-old who brought it was apparently showing it off. Thankfully the student who saw it told a staff member.

Police were called, the 13-year-old’s backpack was searched and the student in question was arrested.

Baracy tells Action News the student now faces a year-long expulsion from all public schools in the state if found guilty of bringing the gun to the campus.
