HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. (WXYZ) - One young man is dead and two others are in critical condition following an horrific crash in Highland Park.
It happened around 7:30 pm on Puritan near Rosa Parks.
Police estimate the car the three young men were in was going eastbound on Puritan at about 100 miles per hour.
Police are investigating the possibility that drag racing was involved.
Officers say the driver lost control of car, hit a tree and the car went airborne before slamming into a vacant house. The car then reportedly bounced off that house before slamming into the brick wall of the house next door.
An 18-year-old was killed in the crash. He has been identified as Jaylin Heath.
Heath’s dad says he bought his son the 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix that was involved in the crash for his birthday in December. He now says, “Hate I bought it now.”
Family members say Heath had just left a holiday gathering with two longtime friends.
However, Heath’s parents say that, while he had been drinking, he was riding in the back seat of the car and that the driver had not been drinking.
Heath’s parents say they heard about the crash shortly after it happened and raced over to the scene. They say they pulled him from the wreckage and drove him to the hospital themselves.
They also say that after they took Heath to the hospital, police officers transported another of the young men to the hospital in their scout car.
They tell 7 Action News that they believe the third victim was eventually taken to the hospital by an ambulance.
