DETROIT, Mich. (WXYZ) - Police arrest two men in the shooting death of a 23-year-old killed for his luxury SUV on Detroit’s east side Thursday.
Today the prosecutor charged 19-year-old Victor Newell and 18-year-old Trenton Shell with five counts: Felony murder, carjacking, felony firearms, arson, and receiving and concealing stolen property. The two men were taken into custody Thursday afternoon after a surveillance team found them going into a garage on San Juan street on the city’s west side.
“He was just a good boy who loved cars and he died for that,” said his mother Sheila Shaver.
Shaver had been shot even though he tried to give the carjacker the keys to his Range Rover. According to police a man with a gun ordered Shaver to get out of the vehicle and then shot him once he got out.
Family and friends are relieved that someone has been arrested, but they said it does not change that fact that Shaver is still gone.
“But that won’t bring him back. That doesn’t give my baby my daddy. So it’s pointless,” said Ashley Davis. Davis and Shaver have a son together, a 3-year-old boy named DeShawn. “At least we still got part of Wyman that’s the only part that’s left of him,” said Davis.
Shaver had been in town visiting family and friends when he was killed.
“He decided to take up nursing and that’s what he did. And he was five months from graduating before his life was cut short,” said his mother.
A life she said she tried to save. Even though Shaver was born and raised in Detroit, he followed his mother to the Toledo area about four years ago to get away from the city’s violence.
The two men who have been arrested will be arraigned in court before a judge on Monday.
