Taylor, Mich. (WXYZ) - 46-year-old Edward Myers, accused of shooting a bicyclist Wednesday evening, has been released from police custody.

Prosecutors will not make a decision on charges for the time being.

The bicycle rider has been identified as 42-year-old Henry Enoch.

“I know where his heart is,” said Barbara Myers of her husband. “His heart is breaking.”

Her husband 46-year-old Edward Myers is in jail waiting to find out whether he will be charged for taking another man’s life. It is something she never imagined he would face.

She says Myers is a loving father, a hard worker, and a veteran who served in the Marines. She describes him as a religious man who tries to do the right thing.

His license plate reads S8N H8R, or if you sound it out “Satan Hater.”

The Taylor man’s troubles started at 6:30 Wednesday evening. Police say Myers was traveling northbound on Telegraph. As he turned eastbound onto Northline, a bicyclist ignored a “Do Not Cross” signal and drove into him.

Witnesses say the bike rider got up from the ground and started punching Myers through his open window. It ended when Myers pulled out a gun and shot the bicyclist in the chest.

Action News has learned the gun was in the center console and it was a .357 pistol.

The bicyclist has been identified as 42-year-old Henry Raymond Enoch.

Police tell Action News the man is homeless and they had trouble finding family members.

“He wouldn’t hurt a fly,” said Barbara Myers of her husband. “He must have been fearing for his life, or he would never have done anything like that.”

“I don’t blame him,” said Michelle Noffsinger, who witnessed it all. “It was self defense."

She and other witnesses told police that Myers only took out a gun after the bicyclist flew at him in a rage and punched him repeatedly.

Police are not commenting on whether Myers suffered any injuries. They say he was carrying the gun legally.

Prosecutors will decide whether to press charges or declare the shooting justifiable.

An attorney representing Myers tells Action News that a decision on charges will not come until next week, and that Myers will have to be released from custody soon.
