GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich (WXYZ) - Action News has learned that the man who claims to have been an accomplice in Jane Bashara's murder was due to appear in a Macomb County courtroom Tuesday.
Joseph Gentz failed to appear in court on a parental rights case because he was under arrest at the Grosse Pointe Park Police Station after telling detectives there that he was involved in Bashara's killing.
The Department of Human Services is trying to terminate Gentz's parental rights to his 10-year-old daughter, claiming that several years ago Gentz left the child in the care of a relative who allegedly began abusing the girl.
Court records indicate that the child's mother, Gentz's ex-wife, spent time behind bars for a Manslaughter conviction. Court records show her parental rights were terminated in 2001.
Action News also learned that the day after Jane Bashara's body was found, Gentz was cashing a check at a Grosse Pointe Park liquor store for $452 from a company store workers only recall as "B & B". Jane's husband, Bob Bashara, owns a company known as B & B Investments.
Grosse Pointe Park detectives have obtained a copy of that check and sources say they have also searched the Wayburn Street flat in Grosse Pointe Park where Gentz was living up until his arrest.
Two women who know Joseph Gentz say he was frightening, boasted about weapons and stalked one of them.
Kellie Roddy, the manager of the Eagle Pointe Apartments in Saint Clair Shores, says when Gentz was evicted last summer he barricaded himself in the apartment and police had to come and get him to leave.
Both Kellie and Debra McWerter say Gentz often made threats and talked about violence. They say they have no doubt he could be involved in a violent crime.
Meanwhile, Detroit Lawyer David Griem visited Bob Bashara on Tuesday afternoon. He says that earlier this week when police questioned Bob Bashara about his wife's murder, they asked him for a list of people who might want to harm him or his family. Griem says the name Joseph Gentz was on that list.
Ironically, sources say Gentz told police he turned himself in because he was afraid he would be blamed for the whole thing. Sources say that while Gentz admits to having a role in it, he also says Bob Bashara had a role as well.
However, our sources say Gentz was wavering about Bob's alleged involvement.
Gentz is still being held and it is reported police are seeking a murder warrant.
