DETROIT (WXYZ) - Your Uncle in the furniture business is back!
After a Chapter 11 bankruptcy more than 40 years ago, and operating under a different name for almost a decade, Robinson Furniture Company is back with a new store in Downtown Detroit.
"The people of Detroit have been amazing! People are stopping by saying thank you for coming to the city," says President and Owner Scott Bradley.
Bradley bought the old Powerhouse Gym on Jefferson and has turned the 15,000 square foot space into a spectacular showroom complete with a 2,000 square foot mattress room.
Bradley is a former partner of the original Robinson Furniture Company.
"I worked there from 1979 to 2003, then I was driving down Jefferson and fell in love with this building," he says.
The store opens to the public Monday morning at 10:00 a.m., but Bradley says he's been serving customers early.
"They've been hearing about it and popping in and the Uncle never turns anyone away," he says.
“Everybody been so friendly it’s incredible… is what it is and I didn’t know what was here.”
Scott Bradley believes he discovered a gem… and turned the old Powerhouse Gym on Jefferson into a new furniture store… with an old name… and a lot of history.
“:14-I was with Robinson furniture from 19-79 … fell in love with it.”
A former partner of the original Robinson Furniture company… Scott is now transforming this 15-thousand square foot space into a hometown store… with a mattress room… that has even started serving customers with the doors closed.
“Bring Uncle back Monday…”
The old Robinson Furniture Company went through Chapter 11 bankruptcy more than 4 decades ago… and lived under a different name for the last nine years… but Detroiters know it well.
“People amazing…”
