DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. (WXYZ) - Just in time for the holiday's several young women who are transitioning from the foster care system, will have a place of their own to call home.
Vista Maria in Dearborn Heights has renovated a 9200 square foot facility on their campus which will now house twenty-two women. The building was constructed in the 1940's as a convent.
The women come from different backgrounds but have a similar issue, no place to live for a variety of reasons.
As they age out of foster care they need a place of their own as they learn how to be productive in their life. At Vista Maria, these girls who are mostly in their late teens, get a room of their own, they have use of a kitchen, recreation areas and computers.
They also get a life-coach and a mentor to help to teach them how to get jobs, manage money and make a better life for themselves.
Girls are provided with a monthly stipend as they leave foster care which in turn helps pay for their stay at the Shepard House on Visa Maria's property. They pay $250 a month while they are in the program and they must be in school, have a job, or both. They are allowed to stay for 18-24 months.
However, from the first day they arrive, they are talking about their exit.
The brand new rooms were made possible by a Federal Grant reward.
