DETROIT (WXYZ) - Should items purchased over the internet be taxed in Michigan?  That’s a much debated question currently under consideration in the Michigan House of Representatives. But according to an exclusive WXYZ/Detroit Free Press poll, it’s a proposal the majority of respondents favor.

In a recent survey conducted by Lansing-based EPIC MRA, 54-percent say they would back a move to apply the same sales tax on internet purchases that you would have to pay if you walked into a store and physically brought something.  Of that 54-percent, 31-percent strongly favor the plan and 23-percent somewhat favor it.  Thirty-nine percent of the 600 people polled oppose such a proposal.  Thirty percent of that number strongly favor it, 9-percent somewhat oppose it, and 7-percent are undecided.

The survey was conducted January 21 – 25 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percent.

See the results of the poll below:

Would you favor or oppose a proposal to require people in Michigan who purchase items over the Internet, to pay the same amount of sales tax that they would be required to pay if they made the same purchase by physically going to a store in Michigan?

Favor – 54%

Oppose – 39%

Undecided – 7%
