(WXYZ) - Your family will probably run into this dilemma a few times this year: When should you keep the kids home from school?
Dr. Victoria Dooley, a family physician from Novi, says it depends on your child's symptoms.
"If your child has a fever, your child should really stay home until 24 hours after the fever is gone," Dr. Dooley said.
She says, from a medical standpoint, a fever should be considered any temperature higher than 100.4 degrees.
A runny nose and cough may not be an excuse to keep the kids home from school, but they should be sure to wash their hands frequently so they don't infect other children, Dr. Dooley said.
If your child is feeling sick during the school day, Dr. Dooley said there are a few reasons why the child should call home to be picked up.
Fever should be the first sign that a child should go home from school.
Dr. Dooley said, if your child is feeling so exhausted and run down that he or she can't concentrate in class, it may be a good idea to have the child picked up.
Strange rashes can also be an important thing to keep an eye on.
"If it's a rash that you're not used to seeing, that might prompt a call to a parent, especially if your child is not immunized," Dr. Dooley said.
