DETROIT (AP) - Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin will be honored in Detroit for establishing a foundation named after their 17-year-old son, Trayvon Martin, who was shot to death by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Florida.
The award is to be given Sunday during Central United Methodist Church's 8th Annual Peace and Justice Banquet at the Detroit Marriott inside the Renaissance Center downtown.
George Zimmerman faces trial in the February 2012 slaying of Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Fla. Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty and said the shooting was in self-defense.
Leadership Conference of Women Religious president Florence Deacon and deceased labor activist Ethel Schwartz will also be honored at the banquet in Detroit. "The New Jim Crow" author Michelle Alexander will speak at the banquet.
