More Michigan cases reported in meningitis outbreak

LANSING, Mich. (AP/WXYZ) - Officials say there are at least 20 confirmed cases of meningitis in Michigan, including two deaths.

In addition to the two deaths, Michigan is reporting 21 cases of meningitis and one infection of a joint associated with the outbreak. The age range of the identified cases is between 38 and 89-years-old.

A Nashville hospital announced the death of another patient from possible fungal meningitis late Monday. Once confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control, it will bring the death toll to nine across nine states. The CDC reports 105 cases of people infected with the fungal meningitis. 

The meningitis outbreak has been linked to a steroid produced by a specialty pharmacy in Massachusetts. The steroid has been recalled, and officials have been scrambling to notify anyone who may have been injected with it.

At least four places in Michigan received shipments of the medication: Michigan Neurosurgical Institute in Grand Blanc; Michigan Pain Specialists in Brighton; Neuromuscular & Rehabilitation in Traverse City; and Southeast Michigan Surgical Hospital in Warren.
