SHELBY, Mich. (WXYZ) - The Michigan primary is a week away and native son Mitt Romney is in a battle for votes.
Romney was introduced as “The comeback Kid” by Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette during a Town Hall meeting Tuesday in Shelby Township.
Polls show Romney has closed the gap on Rick Santorum in the race among Republican hopefuls.
A new MIRS/Mitchell survey has Romney in the lead in Michigan, 32 to 30 percent after he trailed by double digits a week ago.
Romney took direct aim at President Barack Obama’s policies while addressing over 400 people at Eagle Manufacturing Corporation.
“I love this place,” Romney said. “My heart breaks in part for what’s happened across the state.
These have been tough times. It is coming back but it’s with no thanks to this President.”
Romney took questions from the audience and addressed social and religious issues among other topics.
For Nick Kovasity, 73, of Ortonville, Romney answered most of his concerns.
“I liked his sincerity and his character is coming through for me,” Kovasity said. While he’s still not 100 percent certain, Kovasity said he is leaning toward supporting Romney.
Michigan's primary will be held February 28.
