Michigan residents hope NTSB's recommendations heeded

MARSHALL, Mich. (AP) - Some southwestern Michigan residents say they're hoping the National Transportation Safety Board's recommendations are heeded following a 2010 oil pipeline rupture.
Fifty-seven-year-old Deb Miller lives near the Ceresco dam on the Kalamazoo River. She watched parts of Tuesday's NTSB hearing in Washington, D.C., online and said she wasn't surprised by the findings. She says "time will tell" whether recommendations are followed.
The pipeline runs from Griffith, Ind., to Sarnia, Ontario. The spill near Marshall fouled the Kalamazoo River and a tributary creek.
Tom Tarkiewicz is city manager of Marshall, just upriver from where the oil flowed following the break. He says it's clear people were unprepared for a spill of this magnitude.
Tarkiewicz says more attention needs to be paid to inspection reports that might hint at potential problems.
