(WXYZ) - One case of MRSA has been confirmed at Edgemont Elementary School in Belleville.
The school's principal tells 7 Action News that cleaning crews were at the school Tuesday night after one of the students was diagnosed with Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureaus.
The Van Buren School District notified parents about the MRSA case after they found out about it at 5:30 p.m.
MRSA, which is a bacterial infection, usually affects school populations and people who are in large crowds often.
The district has been working with the Wayne County Health Department about how to sanitize the school and to make sure proper protocols are being followed concerning their students.
“This child has been seen by a medical doctor and because she is being treated within 24 hours, she is allowed to come back to before the end of the week," said Delria Crippen, principal at Edgemont Elementary.
The school will be open for classes on Wednesday.
