(WXYZ) - Sure, it came as sad news last night that Slows’ Yardbird did not win the Travel Channel title of best sandwich in the nation ... But we've eaten the winner and we have to say, it’s delicious.
The Travel Channel series "Adam Richman's Best Sandwich in America" chose the Roast Pork from DiNic’s in Philadelphia as the best sandwich in the land.
Philadelphia is, of course, known for sandwiches. Long recognized for its hoagies and cheesesteaks, the city has upped its food game in the last two decades.
Just as Detroit has come to be known for much more complex meals than the coney dog, Philadelphia has evolved its sandwiches. The winning roast pork is a product of that evolution.
DiNic’s is located inside downtown Philadelphia’s Reading Terminal Market. It’s not nearly as nice a place as Slows to sit down for a sandwich and a beer. In fact, there is no beer at DiNic’s.
The market is just what it sounds like. It’s a huge downtown space that used to be a train terminal for the Reading Railroad. Inside, everyone from office workers to tourists mingle among stalls filled with fresh produce, meats, fish and freshly made meals – including a few cheesesteaks and hoagies.
DiNic’s sandwiches have become a hot commodity in just the last few years. They are sold from a simple space and diners eat either at a handful of countertop stools or at tables in the middle of the market.
There are only six sandwiches on their menu board: The winning roast pork, pulled pork, beef brisket, roast beef, Italian sausage and meatballs.
They can all be ordered with a choice of “greens,” cheese and peppers.
In the opinion of this writer – a native Philadelphian – those options are what have upped the sandwich game in the City of Brotherly Love.
Sharp provolone cheese and broccoli rabe show up on many of the city’s best eats. For the uninitiated, sharp provolone is aged and tastes nothing like the provolone many of us are used to. Broccoli rabe is a green sometimes sold around metro Detroit as “rapini.”
The roast pork with broccoli rabe and sharp provolone makes for one amazing sandwich.
It’s topped with just a little gravy. The meat is always moist and marinated in some sort of Italian spices. The bread is flecked with sesame seeds and soaks up that gravy just perfectly.
If you find yourself in Philadelphia and you like spicy foods, order yours with a roasted hot pepper. You will thank us.
WORTH NOTING: We believe that another Slows' sandwich - the Triple Threat - would have beat the DiNic's sandwich in head-to-head competition.
