(WXYZ) - The U.S. Marine Corps is celebrating its 236th birthday.

At Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, thousands of Marines ran in formation while chanting cadence as the sun rose. It's all part of the Corps 236th birthday run that began and ended at Soifert Field.

After the run, the unit stood in formation for the time honored tradition of the ceremonial cake cutting. That's when the oldest and youngest Marine took their traditional pieces of cake.

“I was proud I got the chance to be the youngest Marine,” Pfc. Emma Marie Wott said. “I was actually surprised I was the youngest. I never really thought about it until the ceremony.”

The USMC is a branch of the United State Armed Forces.
