The brother of Turkia Mullin was arrested Wednesday on charges alleging he illegally sold drugs and engaged in health care fraud.
Dr. Hussein Awada, also known as Sam, left federal court on bond after he was arraigned.
Federal agents obtained search warrants and could be seen in and out of two of Awada’s Midwest Family Medicine businesses. Both are located in Warren.
Awada’s sister, Turkia Mullin is being investigated in a separate case involving possible corruption in the Wayne County government.
Rhonda Fitzgerald, an X-ray technician, told 7 Action News she worked for Awada for a couple of months, but said she had to quit after noticing unethical practices.
“When I was working there, he was doing unnecessary X-rays. We were writing out scripts for the patients which we were not supposed to be doing,” said Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald noticed Awada prescribing powerful prescriptions that she says, patients didn’t even need.
“He was doing things that just weren’t right,” said Fitzgerald. “I would see patients come in they were high. He was doing things that just weren’t right. Why are you doing that?”
DEA and FBI agents also searched Awada’s house in Royal Oak.
Family members outside of the house had no comment.
