(WXYZ) - Like so many picky eaters, the recipe to a full stomach can be a challenge for Jacob Hirsch. It’s why his mother Sarah had to think outside the lunchbox.
“So we brainstormed how can we make our choices healthier?” said Sarah, who took Jacob’s favorite food and asked her son to give it a healthy twist.
“We looked at each element of the pizza, and we decided to try and make it all healthier,” said Sarah, “So we started with the crust, and made it a whole grain pita crust. We put hidden veggies in the sauce we make from scratch. We use low-fat cheese, and for protein, we use chicken breast.”
And that’s how the Picky Eater Pita Pizza Pockets were born—An 8 year old’s recipe good enough to catch the attention of the White House.
Jacob’s creation was one of 54 recipes nationwide selected for First Lady Michelle Obama’s Healthy Lunchtime Challenge. The young chef and his mother enjoyed lunch at the White House with the Obama’s.
“Mrs. Obama spoke and then we actually had a surprise visit from President Obama, and we all got to meet him and shake his hand.” said Sarah.
Not only is Jacob a good chef, he’s already thinking business by coming up with his own commercials.
“I’m hungry, what should I eat?” asked Jacob, jokingly setting up the tag line to his commercial, “Maybe I should eat the Picky Eater Pita Pizza Pockets!”
But for his mother, the reward is all about finding healthy meals her kids will enjoy.
“By changing and modifying things that your child already likes, he’ll probably continue to enjoy it even it its healthier version,” said Sarah.
