(WXYZ) - Authorities say a Southfield apartment building fire took the life of a woman in her 60s Tuesday night.
The fire broke out at the Chateau Riviera Apartments near 9 Mile Rd. and the Lodge Fwy.
Crews on scene say the woman was home alone at the time fire broke out.
Steve Manuel, an upstairs neighbor, says a younger woman who could possibly be a granddaughter or niece lives with the victim but wasn't home at the time of the fire.
Manuel says smoke started pouring through his vents. He said his son came out to ask if something was burning. "The next thin you know, about 15 seconds there was smoke everywhere," said Manuel.
"Something like that you can't really prepare yourself," he added.
The Southfield Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire.
