Both Michigan schools fared well in the Round of 64 after the NCAA Divison I College Basketball Tournament kicked off at the Palace on Thursday.
Fourth-seeded Michigan overcame a rough night for Trey Burke in a 71-56 NCAA tournament victory over 13th-seeded South Dakota State.
Earlier in the day, Michigan State's Derrick Nix had 23 points and a career-high 15 rebounds to help power the third-seeded Spartans past 14th-seeded Valparaiso 65-54 .
Both teams advance to the Round of 32 with games on Saturday at the Palace. Michigan will take on fifth-seed VCU on Saturday at 12:15 p.m. Michigan State will match up against six-seed Memphis at 2:45 p.m.
