LONDON - Allison Schmitt of Canton set an American record and took the silver medal in the 400-meter freestyle today, this is her second medal of the 2012 Olympics.
Schmitt had the second best time in qualifying this morning, and was just .02 seconds behind the top qualifier Camille Muffat of France.
In the final race Muffat set an Olympic record, finishing with a time of 4:01.45. Schmitt charged hard in the final 50 meters, but fell just short. Schmitt's time was 4:01.77.
Schmitt will also swim the 200-meter freestyle and the 800-meter freestyle relay in London.
