Maybe experience does count for something at Belle Isle.
Two former champions posted practice times in the top five this afternoon as the IndyCar Series began formal preps for Sunday's Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix.
Will Power, who has won three IndyCar races this season, posted the fastest lap time at 1:12.8355.
Justin Wilson, the 2008 champion, was close behind with a lap of 1:12.9343
Wilson's first career IndyCar Series win came at Belle Isle in August, 2008, the last time the series held a race in Detroit.
Tony Kanaan, the 2007 champion, rounded the course in 1:13.3012, the fifth fastest time of the afternoon session.
Ryan Briscoe from Team Penske was third and rookie Simon Pagenaud was fourth.
Dario Franchitti, fresh off his third career Indy 500 victory, posted the 12th fastest lap of the day at 1:14.0573.
The morning practice session was held in a steady rain and many drivers chose to keep their cars garaged and wait for a dry afternoon session.
No rain fell during the afternoon session and times were in line with what we are used to seeing at Belle Isle.
