(WXYZ) - Detroit Tiger all-star Miguel Cabrera is facing misdemeanor DUI and resisting arrest charges after being arrested in Florida.
According to the police report filed with the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, Cabrera was taken into custody in Fort Pierce, about 2 ½ hours from Lakeland where the Tiger are beginning Spring Training. Cabrera lives in Boca Raton, Florida, about 90 minutes south of where he was arrested.
The police report says that a deputy found the 27-year-old on the side of the road at around 11:00 p.m. Wednesday. Smoke was coming out of the engine compartment of his car.
The officer reportedly took Cabrera into custody after he refused to comply with his directions. The officer also said that Cabrera smelled of alcohol and that his eyes were bloodshot and watery and that his speech was heavily slurred.
During the initial encounter, Cabrera was asked who he was with. He reportedly told the officer “I’m going to
Reports also say that when the deputy question Cabrera, he grabbed a bottle of James Buchanan scotch and started drinking.
When asked for identification, Cabrera gave the officer his passport and got out of the car. The officer says at that point Cabrera walked into the roadway while putting his hands into the air. He was reportedly ordered to get out of the road several times. The officer says Cabrera would comply, but that he kept walking back into the roadway after reaching the side of the road. It was at this point that he was handcuffed.
The police report says that during his encounter with officers, Cabrera said multiple times “Do you know who I am, you don’t know anything about my problems. “
After he was handcuffed, police asked Cabrera to get into one of the cruisers. He reportedly swore at the officers and became combative. At this point officers had to force him into the back seat.
Cabrera was taken to the St. Lucie County jail where he refused a breath test. His car was towed from the scene.
The Detroit Tigers have not commented on Cabrera’s arrest. Their clubhouse has reportedly been closed to the media.
This is not the first time he has been in trouble with the law. In October 2009 he was arrested after a domestic incident at his home following a night of drinking. Reports of that arrest came to light after he appeared in a Tigers game with scratches on his face.
