(WXYZ) - The TIgers and Yankees began their battle to see who will go to the World Series tonight.

After both teams needed their aces to go the distance in the fifth game of their ALDS, neither Justin Verlander nor C.C. Sabathia will make an appearance until game 3.

For the Tigers that means they started the ALCS with Doug Fister, who was 10-10 on the year with 137 strikeouts and an ERA of 3.45. Fister made one appearance against the Yankees where he posted a 2.84 ERA in 6.1 innings, but he did not post a decision.

The Yankees sent Andy Pettitte to the mound. Pettitte was 5-4 for the year with a 2.87 ERA. He did not face the Tigers during the regular season.

The Tigers are looking to steal at least on the of first two games against the Yankees in the Bronx this weekend, before coming back to Detroit and Comerica Park on Tuesday.

12:17 a.m. The Tigers strand one in the 11th and we're heading to the bottom half of the inning.

12:05 a.m. The Tigers get the Yankees out in the 10th. We're still tied at 4 as we head to the 11th.

11:47 p.m. The Tigers go down 1-2-3 in the 10th. We're heading to the bottom of the inning tied at 4.

11:39 p.m. Octavio Dotel comes in to finish up the ninth and we're heading to the 10th tied at 4.

11:36 p.m. And it's now 4 - 4 after Raul Ibanez slams a two run home run in the bottom of the 9th.

11:24 p.m. Ichiro sends it a long way and we now stand at 4 - 2 Detroit with 1 out in the 9th.

11:17 p.m. Jose Valverde comes in to finish this up for the Tigers.

11:15 p.m. The Yankees send reliever Cody Eppley to the mound to start the 9th against the top of the Tigers order. He give up a hit to Austin Jackson before getting the next two outs. Yankees head back to the bullpen and bring in Clay Rapada to face Prince Fielder, who goes down swinging. We're heading to the bottom of the ninth with the Tigers up 4 - 0.

10:57 p.m. A spectacular rundown and catch from Austin Jackson helps get the Tigers out of the 8th. We're heading to the 9th with Detroit up 4 - 0.

10:53 p.m. And that's it for Phil Coke. He gets the first out of the 8th and Jim Leyland calls for Joaquin Benoit.

10:44 p.m. The Tigers add another run to extend the lead to 4 - 0. The Yankees are coming to the plate in the bottom of the 8th.

10:38 p.m. Delmon Young gives the Tigers a little insurance with a solo shot. The Tigers are now up 3 -0 before Jhonny Peralta chases Derek Lowe from the game with a double to center. Boone Logan is now in for the Bronx Bombers.

10:32 p.m. Ichiro makes it into scoring position at 2nd, but doesn't get any farther as Coke gets the Tigers out of a jam. They're still leading 2-0 as we head to the 8th.

10:22 p.m. Fister is done for the night after giving up a one out single to  Ichiro. Here comes Phil Coke.

10:14 p.m. Andy Pettitte give up a two out walk and he's done for the night. The Yankees bring in Derek Lowe who strikes out Miguel Cabrera on three straight pitches. Lowe faced the Tigers twice this season, taking a loss both times and posting a 9.00 ERA through 11 innings. We're at the stretch with the Tigers leading 2-0.

10:01 p.m. For the 3rd time tonight the Yankees load the bases on Doug Fister and for the third time tonight he works his way out of the jam. We're heading to the 7th with the Tigers holding on to a 2-0 lead.

9:48 p.m. The Tigers load the bases, but Andy Pettitte is able to get out of the jam without surrendering another run. It's 2-0 Tigers as we head to the bottom of the sixth.

9:39 p.m. Prince Fielder puts the Tigers on the board with a single, driving in Austin Jackson. He's quickly followed by Delmon Young who drives in Miguel Cabrera, who was intentionally walked. It's 2-0 Tigers with two men on.

9:32 p.m. Another 1-2-3 inning for Doug Fister and both teams are looking for their first score of the evening. 0 -0 though 5.

9:25 p.m.  The Tigers strand a runner on 1st and we're heading to the bottom of the 5th scoreless.

9:15 p.m. Doug Fister seems to have settled down and that gives the Yankees a 1-2-3 bottom of the 4th. Still no score in New York.

9:08 p.m. Another quiet inning for the Tigers bats with only Prince Fielder making it out of the batter's box and we're heading to the bottom of the fourth still 0 - 0.

9:00 p.m. The Tigers

mirror the Yankees and end the 3rd with a double play of their own. We're heading to the fourth still scoreless.

8:54 p.m. A double play ends the Tigers half of the 3rd inning. Here come the Yankees! Still no score.

8:44 p.m. The Yankees load the bases for the second time and just like in the first inning Jhonny Peralta makes the grab and the throw to get them out of the inning. However, things will need to improve with the Tigers' pitching or this will be a long night.

8:34 p.m. Another quiet inning for the Tigers bats. They go 1-2-3 and send us to the bottom of the second.

8:27 p.m Jhonny Peralta's diving catch and throw to second gets the Tigers out of a jam after Doug Fister walks the bases full. No score after 1 inning in New York.

8:13 p.m. Miguel Cabrera gets on base with a hit that splits the third baseman and shortstop, but he ends up stranded as the Tigers go quietly in the first. Doug Fister will now try and do the same thing to the Yankees.

8:00 p.m. The Tigers and Yankees are just minutes away from Game 1. Stay with us for live updates all night long!
