DETROIT - The door has officially been shut.
It was apparent for the past few months Victor Martinez would likely not return to the Tigers, but Friday, the team made it official.
Manager Jim Leyland said before the Tigers game with Baltimore Martinez is "rehabbed out."
"Victor Martinez will not play for the Tigers in 2012, I do not think," Leyland said.
Team trainer Kevin Rand told reporters the team made the decision to shut down the designated hitter on Wednesday. Martinez tore his ACL in January during offseason workouts. Since April, there was a glimmer of hope he would return to the team, as the trainers had reporter substantial progress.
Martinez should be ready to return for Spring Training next year, with two seasons left on his four-year, $50-million signed in 2011.
Martinez batted .330 with 12 home runs and 103 RBI in 2011.
