Tigers release outfielder Brennan Boesch

(WXYZ) - In a move partially motivated by an opportunity to save money, the Tigers have released outfielder Brennan Boesch.

Boesch has found himself struggling to find a spot in the crowded outfield, and with deadlines looming that would activate lucrative clauses in his contract, Tigers management decided the time was right to cut ties.

Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski told reporters in Florida that many teams had shown an interest in Boesch, but no trade could be worked out.

A report from Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com suggests Boesch would have been due 25% of his $2.3 million salary had he been kept on the roster.  His release today leaves the Tigers responsible for $383,333 of his 2013 salary.

During his three years in Detroit, Boesch showed signs of providing power from the left side of the plate, but his inconsistency ultimately led to his release.  In 2012, Boesch batted .240 with 12 home runs and 54 RBI.
