Canton's Allison Schmitt makes Olympic splash for Team USA

LONDON (WXYZ) - Allison Schmitt, a 2008 Canton High School graduate from Michigan, anchored Team USA's 4x100-meter freestyle relay swimming team to a bronze medal performance in day one of the London Olympics.

Schmitt was also instrumental in helping Team USA earn an American record with a time of 3:34:24. Schmitt, 22, is a senior at University of Georgia in Athens. 

Schmitt's fast performance also helped place Team USA 45 seconds behind winner Australia, who set an Olympic record at 3:33:15.

 (an Olympic-record 3:33.15) and the Netherlands (3:33.79).
