DETROIT (WXYZ) - On Feb. 23, Detroit native Cornelius “K9” Bundrage will look to defend his IBF junior middleweight world championship against Ishe “Sugar Shay” Smith at the Masonic Temple Theater in Detroit.
Bundrage currently owns a 34-2 record with 19 of those victories coming in knockout fashion. Bundrage earned the IBF junior middleweight title in 2010 with his fifth round technical knockout of Cory Spinks. He defended his title last year against Sechew Powell and isn’t looking to give the title away to Smith in his home city.
“It’s an honor to be able to bring world championship boxing back to the city of Detroit," said Bundrage. "I always train hard and am prepared for what my opponent might show me in the ring.”
Smith is a worthy title competitor, he has compiled a 24-5 record with 11 of those wins a result of a knockout. Smith has won his last three matches and is looking to for a fourth straight and a junior middleweight title.
"I know he'll have the hometown advantage, but I'm not worried about that,” said Smith. “I'm preparing for the fight of my life and I feel confident that I'll beat him and become the new champion."
Bundrage and Smith won’t be the only title fight of the night. The co-main event is the IBF welterweight world championship that features three-time and two-division world champion Devon Alexander “The Great” looking to defend his title against the No. 1 rated IBF welterweight contender Kell Brook.
"I worked extremely hard to win my title and I'm not giving it away to anyone. This will be a statement-making fight for me," said Alexander.
Brooke recognizes the magnitude of the fight and the possibility of winning a title.
“This is the biggest night of my life. I'm in the best physical shape of my life and the best ever Kell Brook will be in the ring in Detroit and there's no way that I am coming home without that world title.”
Both title fights can be seen live on Showtime at 9 p.m.
