PONTIAC, Mich. (WXYZ) - Detroit Country Day held on to beat Notre Dame Prep, 14-12 in the Meijer High School Game of the Week.
Detroit Country Day took the early 7-0 lead when Tyler Wiegers connected with receiver Moe Ways for a 21-yard touchdown pass.
The score would remain that way until Richard Wilson of Country Day punched it in on fourth-and-goal from the one yard line to give the Yellow Jackets a 14-0 lead late in the third quarter.
Pontiac Notre Dame Prep would respond though. With ten seconds remaining in the third quarter, quarterback Brenden Newvine rushed the ball into the end zone from 10 yards out but the extra-point was blocked to make the score 14-6.
With just over a minute remaining in the game, Newvine rushed into the end zone again to close the gap to 14-12, where Notre Dame was forced to try a two-point conversion, that ultimately failed.
Country Day recovered the ensuing onside kick and kneeled the ball down for the win and the District Championship. Detroit Country Day will move on to battle with Grosse Ile.
The Fighting Irish move on to the Regional Finals.
