(WXYZ) - Even with no NHL season, the Detroit Red Wings and their coaches have found a way to stay busy.
Yesterday, Red Wings' players, coaches, and others affiliated with the organization teamed up to raise money for The Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign.
Mike Babcock and Ken Holland were outside Hiller's Market in Northville for two hours talking with fans, signing gear, and raising money for a great cause.
"This is the seventh year that the Red Wings have been affiliated with The Salvation Army and the Red Kettle Campaign. It's an opportunity for us to help do some good in the community." said Red Wings General Manager Ken Holland.
He went on to say, "We've helped to raise over $45,000 in seven years and obviously helped raise awareness for the good work that The Salvation Army does."
The event, which has become a holiday tradition, gives the Red Wings organization a chance to spread joy amongst the fans that support them all year long and help the community in which they represent.
Head coach Mike Babcock said, "It's an unbelievable cause. Anytime you have people in Detroit that are suffering and need some help... that's what this is all about."
Babcock added, "As Detroit Red Wings we feel we have a lot to be thankful for, and [we have] a lot of fans to thank. This is one of the ways to do it."
During the event, each pair of players and/or coaches heads out to a different metro Detroit location and competes to be the top gatherers.
The team that raises the most is recognized.
Both the head coach and general manager have fun participating, but that doesn't mean they ignore the competition at stake.
Holland reminded everyone, "Mike and I have won three of the last four years... I know Maltby and Chelios are very very motivated and have done a lot of work, [but] hopefully we come out on top."
He adds, "Ultimately The Salvation Army and The Red Kettle Campaign is the winner."
Other teams participating included Chris Chelios and Kris Draper in Troy, Manny Legace and Chris Osgood in Plymouth, and Ken Kal and Kirk Maltby in Saint Clair Shores.
