(WXYZ) - Most every Super Bowl seems to deliver an unsung hero. My vote this year for that hero is Michigan’s Greg Jennings. Jennings is from Kalamazoo and went to Western Michigan.
All he did last night was catch four passes, two of them for touchdowns, good for 64 yards. Not eye popping stats, but they all seemed so crucial at the time. Jennings is a good story for a lot of reasons. He was recruited by Michigan but had some academic issues, got them straightened out and ended up at Western.
He was a second round pick who struggled a little early in his career but this season, his 5th in the NFL, he had 76 catches for almost 1,300 yards and 12 touchdowns. For that he was voted to the Pro Bowl for the first time. Even after the big celebration on the field after the game, Jennings had yet to see, touch or kiss the Lombardi trophy.
Once in the locker room, he walked through the crowd of reporters, family members and friends, sought out quarterback Aaron Rodgers by his locker, and finally got to put his arms around the Lombardi trophy.
He admitted it was a moment he dreamed about as a kid. So last night, in the most watched Super Bowl ever, a youngster from Kalamazoo came through in the biggest game, under the most pressure and realized his dream. That’s just one of the nice, feel good stories from last night’s Super Bowl.
