ALLEN PARK, Mich. (WXYZ) - In an interview with ESPN for SportsCenter, Detroit Lions defensive end Cliff Avril said he will probably not be at training camp when the veterans report in a little more than a week.
"Probably won't be there the first day, that's for sure." Avril told ESPN . "I have to sit down with my agent and figure out when's a good time, it we're even gong to show up. I'm not sure yet."
Avril and the Lions had been trying to work out a long term deal, but were unable to come to terms before Monday's deadline .
The team placed the franchise tag on Avril at the end of last season. Because they failed to work out a long term deal before the deadline, the sides cannot discuss a long term extension until the end of the season. At that point Avril would be an unrestricted free agent and the team will again have the option to place the franchise tag on him.
Lions veterans must report to training camp July 26. Because Avril is not under contract, that mandate does not apply to him.
