CLEVELAND (WXYZ) -

With the NFL free agency period set to begin on Tuesday, March 12, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that the Browns are interested in pursuing Lions defensive end Cliff Avril.

Avril, who is reportedly seeking close to $10 million per year, was hit by the franchise tag by the Lions in 2012.

Since Cleveland is switching to a 3-4 defense next season, there have been reports about Avril playing outside linebacker in that scheme. It is worth noting that Avril played linebacker during his college years for the Purdue Boilermakers.

If Avril were to pack up for Ohio, it would reunite him with Browns defensive line coach Joe Cullen, who spent three years with the Lions in 2006-2008.

Cullen served as an assistant when Detroit drafted Avril out of Purdue in the third-round of the 2008 NFL draft.

Avril led the Lions with 9.5 sacks last year.
